Melissa & Troy – A Look at Love

After six years, these highschool sweethearts decided it was about time to make things official. 🙂 So excited to document their big day next year!! Melissa, hope this sneak peek is a great start to your week of time to relax/recoup from student teaching. You both were amazing yesterday- I can’t thank you enough for your trust and willingness to trek around the park for these. It was a simply perfect, unusually warm October day and we took advantage of all the leaves that were left. Troy, you have one beeeautiful bride to be on your hands.  🙂  Love looks good on you two!  ENJOY.

We started shooting last Friday near Milwaukee’s Lake Park Bistro.  We knew we were pushing our luck, with rain in the forecast but Melissa had rushed out of school to fit photos in and rescheduling with photographers in the fall is always easier said than done… and we were rained on.  🙂  But we managed to snag some sweet overcast-light images before it got too wet:

Part two was anything but rainy.  I love the playful shots we grabbed on Sunday, running around the lakeshore.  I didn’t fall over or run backwards into the lake while backpedalling to take the picture below.  That in itself makes this picture pretty great!  And nice smiles.

Aww.  The matching Sperry’s, the driftwood log, the scarf, the yellow leaves, her smile.  Works for me.

With a busy wedding season wrapping up and senior ordering crunch-time in full swing, this low key, sunny sunny engagement shoot (and 60 minutes of nothing right after it) was just the reminder I needed of two things:
~
1.  LOVE what you do.  What a privilege to capture happy times for couples and families celebrating milestones & new beginnings!  I will see each session with energy and fresh eyes.  Honor the client with a beautiful, honest representation of how blessed they are in the moment.
~
2.  Take time to rejuvenate!  This breath of fresh air for me professionally, was also a literal breath of fresh air that I hadn’t made time for in, well, too long.  Hours spent editing, ordering and packaging lovely images means lots ‘o quality time with my chum, the computer.  And my other chum:  the OTHER computer.  🙂  The end of October really snuck up!  Just thinking about squeezing in pumpkin carving and a trip to the Madison farmer’s market… I only have one weekend left.  November?!  What the heck!  Walking the shore with Troy and Melissa, I could just make out the skyline of downtown six miles south.  The water was Mexico blue and you could hear the birds, not traffic or planes.  That kind of separation is important now and then.  Maybe you need a break from your crazy day-to-day to breathe deep.  Even for an hour. Remember what quiet and calm sound like.  Lay in the leaves or watch them with a hot cup of coffee– and ten glorious minutes to enjoy it, all by yourself.  I got so much done today (not even 3pm eyt!  go me!) and have yesterday to thank.
~
Wrote this last September, as part of a larger project.  I could probably stand to read it once a month.  🙂

I walk by the lake for a while each day, my friend with nowhere to be or to go, and eventually sunset will fall on me–just like it does on you. Without my checking a watch, 6:30p will come and really, what is time? Too often time makes us blind, this I know. Life becomes a blur of shapes as we lose ourselves racing from one thing to the next. Square boxes to check off, arranged with numbers, into lines. On my walk for as long as it takes I soak up the soft, deep red of a leaf like a toddler might.  Curious, enamored, laughing.  Stooping to pick it up and hold it close to her face.
The red of this leaf hasn’t changed since I was a kid. I had to grow up to become young again, a wiser child at the park. They say time doesn’t pass if you’re watching the clock, but I rather think it the other way around. With our lives affixed to two spinning hands, it whirls away.  We lose track of days and weeks and years.  Shackled simply–one band, we become weary slaves.
For the first time in years I see autumn settle on the world.
And it is beautiful.
I’ve taped a red leaf over the pert nose of the clock in the hall. I realize, relieved, I’m not lost. I am found.
